As such, technology forced the fashion world to open its recently exclusive doors to younger and fresher fashion designers as they were the ones who knew how to capture an audience.
Which is why our cover star, Aaliyah Jay, is stepping foot into this amazing industry and to show the world what she is made of. As Aaliyah looks forward to her fashion designing career, I can tell that she will have the world looking at her and what she will cultivate to inspire others in fashion.
Q: Who Is Aaliyah Jay?
“Aaliyah Jay is the IT GIRL. She’s a jack of all trades, she’s kind, she’s generous but she’s also feisty and ready to attack all of her goals! “
Q: What do you aspire to be?
“ I aspire to be my BEST SELF! I notice that when I’m focused on my goals, myself and my business, I thrive the best. I’ve been in so many situations that have almost taken me out mentally, stressed me out emotionally and made me sick physically. I realized all of these things were happening when I was focusing on what other people were doing or worrying. As of recently, I’ve learned to start putting myself first and worrying less. I aspire to be the woman that I see in my dreams who I usually call “MY HIGHER SELF”
Q: Say something about your background?
“A lot of people don’t know this, but I was born in Boston and moved to New York City when I was 5 and have been here ever since. I'm a Boston girl for sure, but I’m a New York girl at heart. I love being from New York so much and lately I’ve been learning to appreciate New York culture, style and more, especially since stepping into the fashion game. New York is the fashion capital. In my eyes, there is no other city that does it better! “
Q: What sparked your interest in fashion and blogging?
“ I’ve always been interested in fashion. I used to always say as a kid that I wanted to be a teacher. Around those times, the only teachers that were excited were school teachers. Nobody knew that you could teach people to do other things like dress, do hair or makeup, especially on YouTube because it wasn’t invented. When I found out about YouTube, I realized that’s where I could do my teaching and it all clicked. It was such an AHA moment for me. A lightbulb went off and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
Q: What inspired you to become a fashion designer?
“ I want to make everyone feel included and give them different options that are versatile. Something I love about being in fashion is buying pieces that can be worn in several different ways. That’s the only way I shop. And because I know I’m super into fashion, in my mind, I see myself giving the same exact concept and aesthetic for my brand. I want people to wear my brand for years down the line in 10 different ways.”
Q: What is it you like best about being a fashion designer?
“ I love how it feels to see my vision come to life. To see something drawn on a piece of paper and to end it with it physically being in your hand is an amazing feeling. It’s like “WOW, I made this!” I never knew how I was gonna be a fashion designer, but it was also aligned for me and I just knew I had to do it one way or another.”
Q: When and how did it all begin?
“It all started in the summer of 2020 started with my brand being a small brand run by 3 people. I started with wholesale pieces and I ran into so many troubles with wholesale and it made me super depressed. So I decided to stop wholesale and it took me a whole year to find partners who can help me physically bring my own vision to life…
Q: Is YouTube the avenue for your marketing as a designer? If so, why?
“YouTube is marketing as a designer but that’s not where I want it to end. I want my brand Twisted Saints to be so huge that I won’t have to rely on YouTube. I want it to be in stores, on commercials, at Fashion week. I want it to be so huge that the brand lives on its own without me! One day this will come true! “ Said the fashion new Birth!
Q: If you could be something else in this world, what would it be and why?
“ I would probably be a scientist, or study astronomy. I absolutely love science. Sometimes it can be overwhelming and this is probably why I didn’t pursue it haha but I love doing my own research late at night when I have nothing to do. Sometimes I just go on google and learn new things about the earth, sky, planets and other scientific facts that us humans casually look over.”
Q: A young girl reading this article and seeing you on the cover, what words of advice do you have?
“I would tell myself to keep going! YOU DID IT GIRL! You're making your dreams come true!!! You did everything you said you were gonna do, now all you have to do is stay focused and keep going to make everything else you dream of come true! Don’t let no one or nothing distract you, especially if it doesn’t benefit you or in your best interest! Distractions come in all shapes and sizes and colors! Stay true to your morals and goals and do what YOU wanna do when you wanna do it! YOU DID THAT! “
